The first successful kayak crossing of Bass Straight was completed by three paddlers from Whitehorse Canoe Club in April 1971.

 

The trio modified their white water slalom kayaks so to be able to carry all of their expedition gear.

 

Several paddling groups kayak across Bass Strait each year, many of them choosing early autumn (March and April) as the best time to cross.
